In today's digital age, the fashion industry is rapidly evolving, creating countless opportunities for budding fashionistas. If you're looking to dip your toes into the world of fashion blogging and influencing to make some extra money, you're in the right place! I don't think anyone can deny that turning your personal style into a business is a great way to earn extra income, and in some cases, can even become full time income! So many of us are looking for ways to make extra money online these days. I know if you are like me, you work a full time job, have a family, and don't have a lot of extra time on your hands. You may need more income but you don't have time for another job. That is why this is so perfect. It allows you to combine something you are passionate about and have fun with, from home, and make money. And once that content is out there, it can really turn into passive income which is even better!

The fashion world is large, that is both a blessing an a curse when you are looking into becoming a fashion brand ambassador. There is plenty of room for everyone, yet there are also many which means that anyone can get lost in the crowd. But the good news is, there are simple ways to help you stand out. There are simple steps to help you build your brand. Let's take the first step to become a successful fashion influencer this year by learning the groundwork.

Step 1: Identify Your Own Unique Voice and Style

Steps to become a fashion influencer

Before you dive into the world of fashion blogging, identify what sets you apart. Embrace your age, style, and life experiences. The fashion industry is diverse, and there's room for everyone. But to become a successful influencer in any market - but particularly in the fashion market - you have to know what sets you apart. You have to know what your unique voice is and who it will reach so you can be talking specifically to those people. And you have to know who you are talking to. Most of the time, your target audience is going to be someone like you. Or, you might often hear, you are going to want to fix a problem you used to have. That is a great way to think about it and look at it! It is a great way to start finding your target audience.

Step 2: Choose the Right Platforms

Instagram is a haven for fashion bloggers and influencers. However, don’t limit yourself. Explore other platforms like TikTok, YouTube, or Pinterest to share your passion. Each platform attracts a different target audience, so do your research and then create your fashion accounts. You want to make sure that you are not using your personal pages, you want to have specific accounts for your new business. That doesn't mean you can't post or share on your personal account but you still want to ensure you have own account for your business where you specifically share fashion content.

What platform should I focus on?

At the end of the day, there are lots of different platforms and you get to choose what you use and what you don't. And while you can certainly post on all platforms, you may want to start with just one or at least focus on just one and then just reshare your posts other places. It can be overwhelming to be trying to grow on all platforms at once and creating different content for each platform. I would focus on content for one platform and then just repurpose it in the other places, you are still going to see growth that way. And sometimes, it might surprise you, I have created content specifically for Instagram that didn't do great there but really did well on Tik Tok and vice versa.

Step 3: Stay Updated with Latest Trends

As a fashion blogger, it's vital to stay updated with what's in vogue. Subscribe to fashion magazines, attend online webinars, or follow other influencers. The more you know, the better you'll resonate with your audience. Following other top fashion influencers and paying attention to the kind of content they are posting and the fashion trends they are talking about will also be helpful in staying up to date on trends. Just make sure if you do any videos like theirs, you are putting your own spin on it, showing your own style, and not just copying them.

Step 4: Create High Quality Content

This cannot be stressed enough. Whether you're posting photos, videos, or blogs, ensure your content is top-notch. Invest in a good camera, learn basic photography skills, and consider collaborating with professional photographers if possible. The important thing is to ensure you are always talking to your specific audience. So many say this but it bears repeating because it is hard to swallow - if you are talking to everyone, you are talking to no one. And you don't have to have a ton of followers to do well in making money. Even as a nano influencer, you can do really well with a little hard work and valuable content. You can build a great group of raging fans that will contribute to your long-term success.

High Quality Content Checklist

Creating high quality content is easier and more accessible than ever.  And more affordable!  We literally have tools at our fingertips like never before!  As long as you have a cell phone that is a model from the last 3-4 years, you don't need to rush to invest in a camera specifically for content creation.  But you do need a great ring light, a tripod and I suggest a travel tripod.  Make sure you are familiar with great editing apps (which are also free!!) like Canva and Capcut.  You definitely want a great scheduling app to help you stay consistent.  My favorite is Metricool (I did a lot of research and have used many myself but this is the one I find most affordable and with the most features).  And stay up to date on trends!  My favorite way to do that is The Social Trend!  Below you will see some of my favorite Content Creation Tools, I have all of these and use them to do all my content creation!  You can grab the full list HERE.

Step 5: Engage with Your Followers

It's not just about the number of followers but the quality of interaction you have. A high engagement rate, where followers comment, share, and interact with your posts, is often more valuable than sheer follower count. And whether they want to admit it or not, when you are getting more people engaging, the social media platform is pushing your content out to more people. You also want to engage with posts that your target audience are watching. This is going to help you expand to a wider audience and grow your brand more.

Step 6: Nurture Brand Collaborations

As you grow, brands will approach you (or you can approach them) for partnerships. Always prioritize collaborations that align with your brand image and ethos. You can collaborate with brands you love in their affiliate programs where you are basically sharing things you love with a link that is specifically tied to you. Affiliate marketing is a huge piece of how fashion influencers - and really any social media influencer! - makes their money. Brands may also send you free products or compensate you for doing a social media post or content they can share about their products. But these brand collaborations are where you can make a lot of money as a fashion influencer.  But, there are also scammers out there who take advantage of newbies with promises of big things.  If you want more details on how to spot a legit brand ambassador on Instagram so you aren't duped, check out my blog post about that HERE.

Step 7: Attend Fashion Events

Network with other professionals

Virtual or in-person, make your presence felt. Networking with industry professionals can offer immense growth opportunities. But again, in the time we live in, you literally have the world at your finger tips with social media and consistently showing up and engaging with other fashion instagram accounts and even other lifestyle influencers is going to be an important aspect of growing your personal brand.

Step 8: Educate Yourself

Knowledge is power. Consider taking an online course on digital marketing, branding, and/or photography. It will help you understand the intricacies of the fashion industry and the digital world. A huge piece is learning how to get people from social media - which you don't own and can be shut down any time - into your world. You do this through funnels. There are two online courses I would recommend for anyone wanting to get into any kind of influencing, regardless of the niche. You want to grow your personal brand and you need to know how to create funnels so you can pull those people from social media into your world. I took both of these courses and they are everything you need to be able to build this as a business.

Step 9: Consistency is Key

Consistency is Key

Like any job, being a content creator requires consistency. Regularly update your social media platforms and blog. It helps in building a loyal audience and enhancing your online presence. Make sure you are posting in all the right places. You can always grab a tool that helps you repurpose materials and post the same posts in multiple places. My absolute favorite is Metricool because it is a very well done and easy platform but it is also very modestly priced. I use it for all my social media accounts. You can even post instagram stories from it which is something I haven't seen in many of the other platforms.

Step 10: Feedback and Evolve!

Always be open to feedback. It will help you evolve, innovate, and cater to your target audience more effectively. Surround yourself with other micro influencers like yourself that you can bounce ideas off of but also form relationships with people who are further along than you and can share essential tips to ensure you are always moving in the right direction. When I say be open to feedback, I don't mean the trolls online who will do anything to drag you down. I want you to ignore those and just keep sharing your love of fashion with the world. At the end of the day, one of the hardest things about being an influencer is that people are mean and there is always going to be someone trying to drag you down. Roll your eyes and move on sister, you got this, and they aren't worth your time, stress or tears!

Getting Moving on that Fashion Influencer Career!

Steps to become a fashion influencer

While these tips are geared particularly towards being a fashion influencer, the reality is, they can apply to any aspiring influencer regardless of niche. You may have to swap some tips out, for example, if you are a pet influencer, you aren't going to go to fashion events, you are going to attend pet events. But just swap out the specifics with your niche and it still works for you.

Becoming a fashion influencer in 2023 is exciting and full of opportunities. The fashion industry and the digital world are constantly intertwining, offering a plethora of chances for budding content creators like you. And when you pull in the affiliate marketing piece, this can be a very lucrative side hustle or full-time job for someone. They say that affiliate marketing is going to be a 21-Billion-Dollar industry. There is no reason you can't have a piece of that!  If you want to learn more about affiliate marketing and how it works, check out this Blog Post I wrote all around that exactly!  And remember, age is just a number, and there's no age limit to following your passion.
