Step 1 to Make Money Selling Printables or Digital Products?  Define Your Niche!

One of the foundational steps in launching your printables business or digital products side hustle is to define your niche. Your niche is essentially the unique corner of the market where your creative expertise and your potential customer's interests intersect. It's where your passion, skills, and the demands of your audience converge. To start, think about what truly excites and inspires you. What are your hobbies, interests, or the subjects that make you come alive? Choosing a niche that aligns with your passions ensures that you'll stay motivated and engaged with your business in the long run. After all, building a side hustle should be an enjoyable journey, not a chore. For example, maybe you love to cook and bake so a good idea for printable products might be things like a Recipe eBook or Printable Recipe Cards. You also need to look at your unique set of skills and expertise which can be a powerful driver for your success. Perhaps you have graphic design skills, love creating spreadsheets, or enjoy crafting beautiful writing. Identify what you're good at and how it can be applied to create valuable digital products or printables. This not only allows you to stand out but also guarantees a higher quality output.

The last part of identifying your niche is to identify your target audience. Understanding your audience is pivotal. Who are the people you want to reach with your digital downloads or printables? What are their needs, interests, and pain points? By defining your ideal customers, you can tailor your products to resonate with them and provide solutions to their specific problems. I have done many trainings over the years and one of the bits of advice I found to be most helpful in this area is that my target audience is probably someone a lot like me. That has been a great place to start in discovering pain points, interests, etc. Another bit of advice, and maybe the hardest to really wrap your head around, a wider audience is NOT ideal. Keep this in mind - if you are talking to everyone you are speaking to no one.

Do Your Keyword Research

Once you have a general idea of your niche, it's time to conduct keyword research. This step is crucial in helping you understand what potential customers are searching for online. Use keyword research tools to discover popular search terms related to your niche, which can guide you in product creation and marketing. Keyword research tools like Google's Keyword Planner, SEMrush, Ahrefs, or, my personal favorite, UberSuggest, are a great way to identify popular search terms and trends within your chosen niche. I also love using AnswerthePublic as a way to find what people are searching for. This information can guide your product creation and marketing strategy, ensuring that your offerings align with the interests and needs of your target audience.

Digital Products You Can Create

One of the most enticing aspects of building a side hustle centered around digital products, such as printables, is the freedom from the need for a physical products inventory. This allows you to focus on what you do best: crafting innovative and engaging digital content. And the best part is, you create the item once, make the digital files and it can sell again and again and again. Here's a closer look at some types of printables or digital products you can create to start your online business:

Downloadable Templates: These are versatile and highly sought-after digital products. You can create templates for resumes, business cards, social media posts, or event invitations. For example, if you have a graphic design background, you can design eye-catching business card templates that professionals will be eager to download and personalize.
Printable Planner: Printable and Digital planners have gained immense popularity, especially in the productivity and self-improvement niche. You can design daily, weekly, or monthly planners, meal planners, fitness trackers, or goal-setting planners. Your customers can easily download and print these to help them stay organized and focused or use them digitally on their computer or iPads, etc.
Artwork: If you're artistically inclined, consider selling digital artwork, such as illustrations, paintings, or graphics. Your digital art can be used for various purposes, from home decor to website design. Platforms like Etsy and Printful allow you to sell your artwork as prints, posters, or on merchandise like mugs and T-shirts which adds another layer of profit for you.
Worksheets: Create educational and practical worksheets tailored to your niche. For instance, if you're in the fitness industry, design workout trackers and nutrition logs. If you're targeting students, offer study guides or math worksheets. Your worksheets can help people achieve their goals and stay organized in a variety of areas.
Checklists: Everyone loves a good checklist, whether it's for travel, party planning, or home organization. Digital checklists are easy to create and can be downloaded and printed by your customers, making their lives more efficient and organized.
eBooks: If you enjoy writing and have valuable knowledge to share, consider creating eBooks. eBooks can cover a wide range of topics, from self-help and recipes to fiction and non-fiction. You can use software like Microsoft Word or Google Docs to format your content, and platforms like Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) to sell your eBooks to a global audience.
Social Media Post Templates: These are hot because social media is everywhere and everyone uses it for a variety of different things. Having some ready to go social media post templates definitely makes the to-do lists easier to conquer for business owners when it comes to social media! You can do Instagram or Facebook posts or stories, you can do Reel templates, and of course Pinterest Pin Templates are very popular as well.
Products to Create

When it comes to a graphic design tool to create these masterpieces, while there are many options out there, there are definitely a couple that reign supreme. Adobe Illustrator and Canva are definitely the two most well known and most widely used. These are powerful design tools that can assist you in crafting a wide array of digital products. Canva, in particular, is user-friendly and offers numerous templates and design elements that can jump-start your creative process. And Canva's free option is very useful, however, you can also opt to upgrade to Canva Pro for more options. And, if you are an educator, you can get Canva Pro for free! Adobe Illustrator, on the other hand, provides professional-grade design capabilities for more complex projects. There are other options such as Adobe Photoshop, CorelDRAW or InDesign that can also be useful.

The key to creating successful digital products is to ensure they are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional and aligned with the needs and interests of your target audience. By crafting high-quality digital products using the right powerful tool and design techniques, you're well on your way to building a profitable side hustle centered around printables and digital downloads.

Set Up Your Online Store

To get your printables and digital products out into the world, you'll need an online platform to sell them. Consider starting an Etsy store or using other popular platforms like Gumroad, Shopify, or even your own website. These platforms provide a user-friendly interface and payment processing, making it easy for your customers to purchase and download your creations. The popular choice is of course, Etsy, however, like everything, you need to evaluate your audience, niche and what you are doing to decide where the best place is for you and your business. There are lots of online marketplaces out there, I encourage you to talk to others in the field to weigh out the pros and cons of each platform.

Setting up your online store for Printables and Digital Products

When setting up your store, you want to make sure you also keep in mind your brand identity. This is going to include things like your niche, store name, logo, color scheme or brand colors. This may seem trivial, but you want people to know it is you and for them to remember you. You want to stick out. These things will make that easier. And regardless of where you decide to set up your store, I encourage you to also have a website of your own because you don't own those other platforms, they can shut you down at any time. You are putting a lot of work into this and you want to ensure you have your own piece of the internet. This is also a good place to start your email list. If you need help setting up your own webpage and branding, I use SiteGround for my hosting and have been VERY happy there. The customer service is top-notch! And if you want help getting your branding in place, I took a course I highly recommend by my favorite business trainer, Tanya Aliza. It is called Ultimate Branding Blueprint. I also followed that up with her List Building Course and both have been two of the best investments I have ever made in myself!

Make Money Selling Printables or Digital Products Through Marketing on Social Media

Now, it's time to put your products in front of your potential customers. Utilize the power of social media to market your digital downloads and printables. Platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook can help you connect with your target audience. Share visually appealing images of your products, create engaging content, and use relevant hashtags to increase your visibility. You want to make sure you use keywords and showcase your best selling designs so you are driving traffic not only to your social media but, more importantly, to purchase!  This is a great place to use a sales funnel. Offer a digital download or printable freebie to get people on your email list, then you can offer an upsell but you also then have them in your sales funnel and can send emails to them any time sharing new products, sales you might be offering, highlight your best-selling printables, or share similar products to ones they already showed interest in. This helps grow your know, like and trust factor and keeps your audience in a space where you can interact with them and share with them repeatedly.

Leverage SEO and Keyword Optimization

To attract organic traffic to your online store, the most important thing is to optimize your product listings using SEO and relevant keywords. Incorporate these keywords into your product titles, descriptions, and tags. This will help your digital products rank higher in search engines and be easily discoverable by potential customers. And you need to be aware of the SEO for different places. The SEO for Google is going to be different than Etsy SEO or Pinterest SEO. If you need more info on SEO, this is a very in-depth topic but I did write another full blog post on it that you can see HERE.

Diversify Your Product Offerings

Keep your printables business fresh by continuously creating new digital products. Consider customer feedback, seasonal trends, and your niche's evolving needs. You can also revamp your popular printables but just changing them up a bit or offering different sizes. By offering a variety of products, you can maintain customer interest and loyalty while also increasing your profit margin.

Provide Exceptional Customer Service

Customer satisfaction is key to building a successful side hustle. Be responsive to customer inquiries, address their concerns promptly, and provide high-quality products. Positive reviews and word-of-mouth referrals can significantly boost your online store's reputation. And an easy way to lose customers and quickly is by not providing exceptional customer service.

Scale for Passive Income

As you gain experience and your side hustle grows, you can automate certain aspects of your business to generate passive income. Tools like email marketing, social media scheduling, and automated delivery systems can help you save time while your income continues to flow. And while this is something you can work on down the road, as I mentioned early on, some helpful tips to growing your business include having that website and starting that email list even if they are not your focus right away. Having that foundation there gives you the right tools to scale your business when you are ready!
